Keeshond Breed Info

HEALTH

Keeshonds puppies are a robust and energetic breed, typically living a happy and healthy life of 12-15 years. To ensure the continued health of the breed, the Keeshond Club of America recommends that breeders conduct specific health tests on their breeding dogs. These tests include Hip and elbow X-rays to screen for dysplasia, Exams for patellar luxation, CERF eye exams and Genetic screening for primary hyperparathyroidism. Reputable breeders have made significant strides in reducing the incidence of these conditions in the breed. By taking these steps, you are sure to bring home a healthy, thriving Keeshond puppy.

GROOMING

Keeshonds necessitate consistent grooming; however, a weekly session with a pin brush is typically sufficient to manage their coats. This practice effectively removes the undercoat and minimizes shedding. The only areas requiring trimming are around the feet, pads, and hocks. Pet owners may choose to brush their dogs weekly and schedule a visit to a groomer for a bath and blow-dry every four to six weeks, or they may opt to perform these tasks themselves. Show dogs are usually bathed a few days prior to the weekend of the show.

The Keeshond possesses a striking appearance, characterized by its dense double top coat, soft undercoat, and longer outer (guard) coat. Males tend to have a more abundant mane compared to females. The hindquarters feature "trousers," with longer hair extending down to the hocks. The tail resembles a plume adorning a lady’s hat. The Keeshond's coloration consists of a blend of cream, black, and gray. Distinctive facial markings create the illusion of spectacles, complemented by a subtle dark line that extends from the outer corner of each eye toward the ear. Remarkably, maintaining the Keeshond's full coat is relatively straightforward. Matting is not a significant concern, provided that the dog is brushed at least twice a week. However, it is important to note that the Keeshond experiences substantial shedding twice a year, during which it "blows" its entire undercoat simultaneously.

NUTRITION

Keeshonden thrive on high-quality dog food, whether it is commercially produced or home-prepared under the guidance and approval of a veterinarian. Similar to many Northern breeds, they benefit from a fish-based diet that is low in carbohydrates. It is essential that any diet is suitable for the dog's life stage, whether it be puppy, adult, or senior. Some dogs may be predisposed to weight gain, so it is important to monitor their caloric intake and overall weight. While treats can be beneficial for training purposes, excessive amounts can lead to obesity. It is advisable to familiarize yourself with which human foods are safe for canine consumption and which are not. If you have any concerns regarding your dog's weight or dietary needs, consult your veterinarian. Additionally, ensure that clean, fresh water is accessible at all times.

The amount of food an adult dog requires is influenced by factors such as size, age, body structure, metabolism, and activity level. Each dog is unique, much like humans, and their food requirements can vary significantly. It is evident that a highly active dog will necessitate more food than a less active one. Furthermore, the quality of the dog food purchased plays a crucial role; superior dog food will provide better nutrition, allowing for a smaller quantity to be sufficient in meeting your dog's dietary needs.

EXERCISE

Keeshonden are highly adaptable to various living conditions. Traditionally, they have resided in environments ranging from expansive farms to confined barges. Regular exercise is crucial for their well-being, and they thrive on companionship with their families. A daily outing, whether a leisurely walk or a vigorous run, will enhance their physical and mental health, making them content to join you on the sofa as you read or watch television. It is important to recognize that Keeshonden are cheerful dogs, and they will exhibit their happiness daily if you dedicate time to them.
